SANTO DOMINGO, RD.- ¿Usas tu visa de paseo para trabajar por temporadas en Estados Unidos? ¿Te quedaste más tiempo del permitido? Podrías perderla, y para siempre. Así lo advirtió el nuevo cónsul de EE. UU. en República Dominicana, William Swaney, en su primer encuentro con la prensa tras asumir el cargo esta semana.
Swaney ofreció actualizaciones consulares y respondió preguntas. La actividad se desarrolló en un ambiente de intercambio directo, con el objetivo de informar sobre cambios y novedades en los servicios consulares, fortalecer la transparencia institucional y fomentar un diálogo abierto con los medios de comunicación.
William Swaney compartió precisiones sobre el uso de la visa con la prensa
Swaney explicó que la administración de Donald Trump ha ordenado revisar 55 millones de visas para detectar irregularidades. Entre las más comunes, trabajar sin permiso y permanecer en EE. UU. más del tiempo autorizado.
Las tres razones que te cancelan la visa
El cónsul fue directo: puedes perder tu visa si (1) trabajas con visa de paseo, (2) te quedas más tiempo del permitido, o (3) si has sido detenido por manejar borracho. “Si sobrepasas tu estadía o violas las condiciones, te la vamos a quitar. Muchas veces, para siempre”, advirtió.
La visa B1/B2 es solo para turismo o negocios, pero muchos dominicanos la usan para trabajar por temporadas. Esa práctica ilegal es una de las principales razones por las que EE. UU. está cancelando visas en RD.
¿Por qué es importante para los dominicanos?
Porque el país ocupa el segundo lugar mundial en solicitudes de visa de inmigrante, solo superado por México. Además, cada año miles de dominicanos aplican a visas de turismo, lo que los pone en la mira de este tipo de controles migratorios.
El mensaje es claro: el uso indebido de la visa no solo puede dejarte sin viajar, también te expone a deportación y a una prohibición permanente.
