República Dominicana lidera respuesta regional a la crisis del sargazo en evento de alto nivel en la Tercera Conferencia de los Océanos de las Naciones Unidas

DIARIO ULTRAMAR, NIZA, Francia.- La República Dominicana, a través del ministro de Medio Ambiente y Recursos Naturales, Paíno Henríquez, encabezó la apertura del evento de alto nivel “Sargassum Crisis: Regional Cooperation and Response Towards New Opportunities”, realizado el lunes en la sede de la Tercera Conferencia de las Naciones Unidas sobre los Océanos (UNOC3), en Niza, Francia.
Este evento fue organizado en estrecha coordinación con el Ministerio de Relaciones Exteriores de la República Dominicana, reflejando el compromiso del país con una diplomacia ambiental activa y propositiva.
Durante su intervención, el ministro Henríquez alertó sobre el impacto creciente del sargazo como fenómeno transfronterizo que compromete el desarrollo económico, la salud pública, los ecosistemas marinos y la seguridad energética. En 2024, más de 37.5 millones de toneladas de sargazo flotante se registraron en el Caribe, de las cuales más de tres millones impactaron las costas dominicanas.
Además, el ministro Henríquez presentó los esfuerzos realizados por el país, incluyendo la creación del Gabinete Nacional de Lucha contra el Sargazo (Decreto 379-23), y la inversión de más de 100 millones de pesos en iniciativas de valorización del sargazo, en línea con una economía circular.
El evento contó con la destacada participación de autoridades regionales y aliadas estratégicas. Por parte de Francia, país anfitrión, estuvieron Arnaud Mentré, embajador para la Cooperación Regional en el Atlántico; Thani Mohamed-Soilihi, ministro para la Francofonía y Asociaciones Internacionales, y Agnès Pannier-Runacher, ministra de Transición Ecológica.
También estuvieron presentes Alicia Bárcena, secretaria de Medio Ambiente y Recursos Naturales de México; Alicia Montalvo, gerente de Acción Climática y Biodiversidad Positiva del Banco de Desarrollo de América Latina y el Caribe; Didacus Jules, director general de la Organización de Estados del Caribe Oriental (OECO); Noemí Espinoza Madrid, secretaria general de la Asociación de Estados del Caribe (AEC); Christopher Corbin, coordinador del Convenio de Cartagena por parte PNUMA, y Sylvie Gustave Dit Duflo, vicepresidenta de la Región de Guadalupe.
La secretaria de Medio Ambiente y Recursos Naturales de México, Alicia Bárcena, reiteró que “no tenemos tiempo para modestias graduales, debemos crear la acción colectiva audaz para enfrentar la crisis oceánica”.
La República Dominicana, junto con México, Costa Rica y Francia, presentó una propuesta de resolución para su consideración en la próxima Asamblea de las Naciones Unidas para el Medio Ambiente (UNEA), orientada a establecer una definición común de los flujos y dinámicas del sargazo; fortalecer los sistemas de alerta temprana y monitoreo satelital; movilizar financiamiento internacional para los países y comunidades afectadas; promover la investigación científica y las soluciones de valorización segura; e impulsar la gobernanza regional a través del Convenio de Cartagena, Caricom, OECO y otros socios.
Como paso siguiente, la República Dominicana propuso la creación de una coalición interregional contra el sargazo, como plataforma de acción para enfrentar este desafío ambiental desde la cooperación, la innovación y el financiamiento climático.
El evento marcó un hito regional y reafirma el liderazgo del país en la defensa de sus costas, sus comunidades y su economía azul.
